Welcome to the Freaking Nomads Newsletter, your weekly dose of stories, insights, tools, and opportunities for digital nomads and remote workers building a life without borders.
Hey Freaking Nomads,
A few weeks ago I spent almost a month in a city where I didn't know a single person.
There was a guy I kept half-seeing. Laptop stand, headphones, clearly working. Never at my café though. Always the one across the street, or the one I'd left an hour earlier.
Neither of us said anything for a month.
We finally spoke and found out he'd been staying four streets from me the whole time.
Unfortunately, he flew out the next day.
That's the part nobody warns you about. It's not that the digital nomads aren't there. They're there. You just have no way of knowing.
But that's a solvable problem, and it took us longer than it should have to notice.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve built a live map that shows you where digital nomads are right now. You drop your location, you see who's nearby, and you can message them directly.
Some of you are already on it, which is how it works at all. Right now, there are nomads on there in Doha, Stockholm, Singapore, Lisbon, Chiang Mai. If your city looks empty, add yourself here and give it a week!
Right now the map shows you people. It could also show you the meetup happening near you, or maybe allow you to check into a specific cafés, coworking or coliving you are staying in, so people would know about it and have a reason to connect with you and you would also know where people hang out and join them too.
To do so, we need your help in understanding what would be the right meetup format to build for you and what you'd use to meet other nomads in the community.
Pick the option from the poll below, or you can just reply to this email if it’s easier.
I personally would like to see....
See you on the map!
Luca

🧑💻 The Nomad Resource of the Week
I used to think portable monitors were a bit much. Extra weight, extra cable, extra thing to explain at security.
Then I spent two weeks working off a 13-inch screen with fifteen tabs open and I decided to give a few monitors a try.
The ASUS ProArt is definitely the one I'd point people to:
Colour-accurate out of the box, so what you send a client is what they see
Single USB-C cable for video and power, no separate brick
Built-in stand, nothing extra to pack
Slim enough to slide into the laptop sleeve you already have
It's not for everyone. If you work in one document at a time, skip it. But if your job involves two windows side by side, it's the thing that stops you working hunched over a screen the size of a paperback!
