Welcome to the Freaking Nomads Newsletter, your weekly dose of stories, insights, tools, and opportunities for digital nomads and remote workers building a life without borders.
Hey Freaking Nomads,
Every few weeks, someone writes in asking: "How do I actually make money online so I can go nomadic?"
I get it. When I left my old life behind, I had no clear answer either. I just started moving and figured it out as I went.
A lot has shifted since I started out in 2021. AI especially has reshuffled the deck on which skills travel well and which ones don't.
But now that we've built Remote Nomad Jobs, I've had a front-row seat to what's actually working in 2026. And a few patterns keep showing up.
If you'd rather be employed:
Software development. Still the biggest category by a mile. Full-stack and cloud especially. Highest ceiling, but also the longest runway to get good enough to get hired.
Customer success and SaaS support. Companies hire remote-first here constantly. One of the more realistic entry points if you're personable and organized.
Project and delivery management. The people who keep distributed teams from falling apart. If you've ever quietly run things at a normal job, you already have most of this.
Operations and executive assistance. One of the most in-demand and least talked-about. The reliable people get poached fast!
If you'd rather work for yourself:
Design. UX/UI and product design. Visual, portfolio-driven. You can show your work before anyone asks for a CV.
Writing and content. The lowest barrier to just start. No certification, no portfolio gatekeeping. The catch is everyone knows that, so you have to actually be good.
SEO and marketing. Still pays, still in demand. AI didn't kill it, but it massively raised the bar for the people who know what they're doing.
Teaching and tutoring. Languages especially. Genuinely the one you could start this week with a laptop and a decent connection.
You probably already have a sellable skill. Most people who write to us don't need to learn to code or design from scratch. They already do something a remote company or a potential customer would pay for. They just haven't figured out how to package it yet.
And that's the real bottleneck. Not talent. Visibility.
Most people are waiting until they feel ready. The ones who get there just started before they did.
If you want somewhere to start, the profiles page on Remote Nomad Jobs is free. But honestly, anywhere works. Just put something out there today!

🧑💻 The Nomad Resource of the Week

At some point as a nomad, your taxes stop being a once-a-year annoyance and start being a genuine source of dread. Different country, foreign income, maybe an LLC or two, a state you're not sure you've actually left. And your regular tax person back home usually has no idea what to do with any of it.
We've heard this a lot and experienced it ourselves, and that's why today we thought to share about a tax firm we found called Big Cake Tax.
They are a US tax strategy firm built for digital nomads, expats, and remote business owners, and it's nomad-owned and operated, so the team actually lives the cross-border lifestyle they're advising you on.
They are specialised in:
Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) and foreign tax credit analysis to legally lower your US tax exposure
FBAR and FATCA foreign reporting
State residency and domicile planning, plus multi-state messes
Prior-year clean-up, catch-up filings, and IRS notice and penalty resolution
Business taxes, including entity formation, S-Corp structuring, bookkeeping, and payroll
Real estate and rental property tax support if you're investing while you roam
The whole thing starts with a consultation, so they can actually know your situation rather than slot you into a queue. Compared to other big firms out there, they feel less like an accountant and more like a very qualified friend who finally gets it. So, it's always great to know there are such tax firms out there.
🎁 Special discount: If you decide to give it a shot, feel free to use the code EATMORECAKE to save $50 on your first consultation.
(Disclaimer: Not tax advice, and we're not tax professionals. Just a useful resource we came across that's built for people who live the way we do.)
